IISI Backs Winning Steel Designs for Housing

Living Steel, a worldwide program instituted by several leading global steelmakers and managed by the IISI to promote steel-based solutions for environmentally sound, domestic architecture, has named the winning entries in its second International Architecture Competition for Sustainable Housing.

In the contest, architects were challenged to design “efficient and innovative housing solutions using steel construction to meet the demands of a burgeoning global shortage.” The competition called for entries that propose designs for one of three locations: Brazil, China, and the United Kingdom.

The winning designers are: Brazil, Andrade Morettin Arquitetos Associados Ltda., Brazil (see right, above); China, David Knafo Tagit Klimor, Architects and Town Planners, Israel; and the U.K., Cartwright Pickard Architects, U.K. (see right, below.)

Each of the winning firms will be awarded a prize of €50,000 and a contract to develop their designs for construction, with a demonstration building in each location. Fifteen other firms in the contest will be awarded a prize of €10,000 each.

The steelmakers that are members of the Living Steel coalition are Arcelor Mittal, Baosteel, Blue- Scope Steel, Celsa Group, Corus, Erdemir, Posco, Ruukki, SeverStal, and Tata Steel.
