Deal a seal/ seal a deal
Mood:  accident prone
Topic: Green

Recently here in Canada our acting Fisheries and Oceans Minister Gail Shea was delivering a speech at the Canada Centre for Inland Waters to open a Aquatic Life Research Facility, designed for studying fish and aquatic life health in the contexts of toxicant and stressor exposure, according to their on-line web site, part of their mandate also includes

  • testing the potential toxicology of oil sands tailings water, sediments and effluents, toxicology of priority Chemicals in a management plan in fish, turtles and amphibians and effects of altered food chains on reproduction in lake trout

But New York PETA member Emily McCourt was also present at the speaking event as part of its campaign to stop the government's "ill-advised sanction of the slaughter of seals."

.....in which she had this to say.(link)

SEAL HUNTS

Exemptions for aboriginal harvests i.e. Northern Inuit are being negotiated while the regulatory ban by the EU won't kick in until next August.

Since the European Union banned Canada's seal products, Canada has been looking for other markets, in particular: China. Despite years of efforts China still has yet to certify Canadian seal meat for human consumption. Canada will initiate a trade action against the EU if negotiations before the World Trade Organization dont succeed.

South Korea is one of few countries that imports Canadian seal meat for human consumption.
