In 18th century England, macaroni was a synonym for perfection and excellence. That's why, for example, the feather in Yankee Doodle's cap was called "macaroni." In fact, the word "macaroni" means "dearest darlings" in Italian.

Thomas Jefferson is credited with introducing macaroni to the United States. It seems that he fell in love with a certain dish he sampled in Naples while serving as the U.S. Ambassador to France. In fact, he promptly ordered crates of "macaroni," along with a pasta-making machine, sent back to the States.

World Refugee Day
Mood:  sharp

... in Western Canada roughly half of

refugees seeking

solace from persecution are from just two

countries: Burma and Iraq.

But globally, the conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq have produced nearly half of all the world’s refugees and dispossessed people in 2008.

- -  -- - -  --

Advocacy groups, like Refugees International and Human Rights First, are continuing to eye the Obama regime to see what becomes of a pledge to “commit $2 billion to a new international effort to support Iraq’s refugees.”

http://www.theirc.org/special-report/iraqi-refugee-crisis.html

It was during and under the last US Presidency, that about 13,000 Iraqi refugees were accepted,.. the vast majority given entrance during Bush’s final year in office. Under Obama, this year alone, the goal is to accept close to 17,000 Iraqis.

Iraqs refugees' are now considered by some to be one of the fastest growing refugee crises in the world with thousands of Iraqis fleeing their home country every month.

Indeed, even displaced people from as far away as the formerly annexed area of Palestine are trying to get out of being internally displaced in Iraq, in which children, women and the elderly have died due to the lack of adequate healthcare  Al Jazeera reports.

And rape, as in ANY war zone of any country involved in armed conflict(s) is also a huge persisntly growing problem and issue, adding an extra peripheral problematic unseen cut to the bloody open sores and cuts of war and its costs.

To add to this, recently Amnesty International reported that only one in five Iraqi cases of rape result in convictions in Denmark, and 12 percent in Sweden. Both countries have been cited by the internationaly respected human rights group for not doing enough to genuinely aid in the Iraqi refugee crisis.

And the frequently overlooked and neglected topic of rape as a shameful collorary of war for countries such as Iraq, the attached stigma alone means the rape crisis never ventures out alone during either night or day for examination or discussion by an unknowing populace.

The topic is: taboo. And for Iraqi's: too shameful.

Meanwhile,  Australia's refugee resettlement program has been praised as "one of the best in the world".

Heres some cross-gender leadership corporate cultural appeal for all first time and return visitors.

In my opinion ,the article and story subtly undertones the benefits of women in leadership roles by highlighting and accentuating the multi-tasking role many women play and use in their lives by simple rote.

Not that males should try to shore up their ability by morphing into micro managers, but lets have it, learning curves do not have to be necessitated and pock marked with "mistakes".

Indeed, this type of business model for construction industry has worked well for http://kullman.com

Since it was discovered many Americans could not actually name a single living scientist, making "Britney Spears more influential than Stephen Hawking among most Americans."

...here comes now:  Rock stars and science.

A few of the world's top researchers and doctors with some of the top rock stars are featured together in this months issue of GQ Magazine.

And voila, here is the actual spread.

"The age-adjusted mortality rate for cancer is about the same in the 21st century as it was 50 years ago, ...whereas the death rates for cardiac, cerebrovascular, and infectious diseases have declined by about two-thirds. "

Like me, before today you may have not even heard of Joseph Burchenal , (doesn't even have a Wik page? ) as one of the pioneers in the use of chemotherapy.

It was from his work and his team, that the resulting progress against childhood leukemias, despite the toxicity of the drugs and the lethality of the diseases, built confidence in the notion that biology and chemistry could be harnessed to benefit patients with cancer.

Also, I found this interesting contest. Aslan are makers of luxury Alpaca wool. They are offering cash prizes plus a chance to help benefit cancer research and support.

It's open to all North American residents, novice or expert.

So,...go be a rock star now. :)Innocent

and did you know that the Spaniards smoke twice as many French cigarettes as the French themselves?

This was the reason why when the last French factory making proper French cigarettes was closing down, the firm left one plant still producing:  in Spain  !

Slender morsel: the Americans and the British smoked light tobacco - "blondes" or blonds, as the French call Virginia cigarettes.

Whereas the French smoked "brunes" - brunettes.

Ad from Quatar. Liberte?

The other famous French cigarette goes by the name Gitanes which means "Spanish gypsy women". As any gypsy woman would tell you: you gotta have a gimmick.

So you can bet, if American ad houses took on the campaign to market and sell Gitanes, the first idea to be run up the flagpole and see who salutes would be: " Gimme a Gitanes..."

PS SINCE THIS BLOG ENTRY WAS MADE, i HAVE HEARD IN THE NEWS THAT A BAND OF GYPSIES WANT TO SUE THE CIGARETTE MAKERS FOR COMPENSATION FOR UNAUTHORIZED TRADEMARK USE ..heh

More hungry this year because of global crisis: FAO

UN agency estimated that more than one billion hungry in this 2009.

Rome. Hunger in the world will have a new record in 2009 with over one billion people suffer from it daily, according to new figures presented in Rome this Friday by the Organization of the United Nations Food and Agriculture (FAO ).

The increase in the number of hungry people increased because of the international crisis that has reduced revenues and increased unemployment among the poorest and not to reduced harvests, he stressed the UN agency, which believes that this year there will be a 11 per cent more hungry.

"A dangerous mix of the global economic recession combined with high prices of food, persistent in many countries, has pushed some 100 million more people last year to chronic hunger and poverty," said director general of FAO Jacques Diouf.

".. continued rise of local staple food prices in developing countries, even though global food prices have fallen from their 2008 highs ."

On the eve of World Refugee Day Jun. 20, a new report says the worst places to be a refugee last year were Thailand, South Africa and the Gaza Strip..

POPULATION: The Worst Places to Be a Refugee

Keep in mind, Thailand is such a poor country, the previous 3 armoured limousines they previously had are in such poor shape, they need 17 more. 17 more armoured limousines. Seventeen. Armoured. Limousines. In a recession. A global economic "crisis".

- --Although the numbers show less people sought refuge outside their homelands the previous year,  the world remained an unhospitable and unwelcoming place for many who fled.

Fewer become refugees but many who do find trouble

Nearly 30 photographs of the first years of Mexican Revolution, many of which portrait what is considered the first Mexican Army intervention, were recently located by Samuel Villela, National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) anthropologist.

“Many of these extraordinary images were not published again. Publications were expropriated from their Jewish editors when Hitler assumed power, and photographic originals were lost”
