Cloud Atlas, even with neo-political leanings and aspirations aside-,.. is a film built to push a few of your buttons; whether to make you laugh or cry really doesn't matter as it succeeds in doing so on both counts.
Halle Berry is a dream to watch; playing a unique role in from a beyond the times horizon in futuristic fashion that would make Tom Ford gush, Tom Hanks him self runs the gambit from each character in seamless and believable style and the rest of the supporting ensemble are terrific as well and hold the rest of the scenes together.
I can easily see the film getting the Oscar nod for Best musical score; and gently prodding us back here to the plot portents of the film, there is a bit of backbone to the story regarding individualistic artistic accomplishment and how easily a person can be throned or dethroned dictated by the zitgeist of their times.
I found my self wanting to hear more and more of the orchestral score even as the credits rolled towards the end. It is a haunting melody and very beautiful.
I could also see the Oscar nominations coming for Best Picture, Tom Hanks as Best Actor, Doona Bae for Best Actress in a Supporting Role, an Oscar nod for Art Direction and also as mentioned Costume Design.I would even say special effects and CGI because the futuristic casting of Seoul Korea is so-so-so spectacular.
