and did you know that the Spaniards smoke twice as many French cigarettes as the French themselves?
This was the reason why when the last French factory making proper French cigarettes was closing down, the firm left one plant still producing: in Spain !
Slender morsel: the Americans and the British smoked light tobacco - "blondes" or blonds, as the French call Virginia cigarettes.
Whereas the French smoked "brunes" - brunettes.

The other famous French cigarette goes by the name Gitanes which means "Spanish gypsy women". As any gypsy woman would tell you: you gotta have a gimmick.
So you can bet, if American ad houses took on the campaign to market and sell Gitanes, the first idea to be run up the flagpole and see who salutes would be: " Gimme a Gitanes..."
